One person has died and three have been injured after a yacht sank off the coast of Northland.
Emergency services received a mayday call around 12:30pm on Monday after the 47-foot yacht ran into trouble in bad weather.
The boat then sank around 37 kilometres off the coast of Cape Brett, police said.
Two rescue helicopters, an air force P3 Orion, a Coast Guard ship and a merchant vessel responded to the incident.
A life raft was dropped to the sinking ship's crew, and all four were winched up to the Auckland Westpac Rescue Helicopter.
One person subsequently died, while the other three were taken to Whangarei Hospital.
Police said they are in the process of notifying the victim's next-of-kin.
The three survivors are all in a moderate condition.
