An independent review of the New Zealand Police will be undertaken due to complaints of bullying.

Police Commissioner Mike Bush announced the review will be undertaken by Debbie Francis - the same consultant who carried out the review of Parliament.

"Eliminating bullying - and ensuring that if it does happen, it is addressed as quickly as possible, is an absolute priority for our organisation," said Bush on Tuesday morning.

The terms of reference for the review will be completed by the end of the week, he says.

The announcement follows a former constable claiming he feared for his safety while working on the force.

On Monday John Woodward told RNZ he was a victim of sustained bullying by members of the police during his final years working on the West Coast.

Since the interview, RNZ says it has spoken to almost 100 other police employees who agree bullying is rife.

Bush says the review is a priority which will be completed as soon as possible.
