New Zealand's run of wild weather is set to continue throughout Sunday.
- Weather: Grim weekend delivers downpours, thunderstorms, lightning strikes
- 'Firestorm' devastates Australian state, killing two with 'more losses' expected
- Weather: Rain to spread across NZ this weekend, heavy falls likely for some
The rain has already arrived in Auckland, and is set to worsen over the course of the afternoon.
Auckland will be under a heavy rain warning from 2pm, meaning the T20 cricket match between New Zealand and England to be held at Eden Park is in danger of being abandoned.
The MetService has issued a heavy rain warning for Waikato, Waitomo, Taumarunui, and Taupo,
NIWA also warns of the possibility of "dangerous cloud-to-ground lightning" with the North Island and upper South island being most at risk as the stormy weather moves in.
Strong wind warnings have been issued for the Bay of Plenty, Gisborne, Taranaki and Nelson.
Meanwhile, Australia's bushfires may also impact New Zealand's skies with NIWA saying the dust and smoke from New South Wales' fires are "quite prominent on satellite imagery" drifting across the Tasman sea over the South Island, with the North Island possibly affected on Sunday night too.
