Baldwin Street in Dunedin lost its place to Ffordd Pen Llech - a street in North Wales, earlier July this year.

Dunedin surveyor Toby Stoff has travelled to Wales to map the steep street himself. With his findings he wants Guinness World Records to return the crown to Baldwin Street.

Stoff managed to crowd-fund his trip to Whales by creating the page 'Save Baldwin St'.

He managed to raise $8,325.

Locals aren't giving it up without a fight.

Stoff told Newshub: "The record is for the steepest street and a street isn't just one side, it's a three-dimensional shape that has width."

He believes it should be an average of the left, right, and centre gradients.

"If you take the average, you're looking at around 29 percent, which is six percent flatter than Baldwin St."

Stoff said judging on where the cars drive, they avoid the steepest part.

"We just want to prove what we've always suspected is that Baldwin St, when you average the left, centre, and right is steeper that Ffordd Pen Llech."

Stoff is certain the winner should be Baldwin street.

"It's a mathematical certainty. The facts are the facts and sometimes you need to let the facts speak for themselves."
