Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) crews have contained multiple blazes in the South Island on Thursday afternoon.

Ten fire crews and two helicopters fought a large vegetation fire in central Otago.

A FENZ spokesman told Newshub the fires were first reported at 1:20pm and were located on Church Ln, at the Cargo Brewery in Gibbston. The fire originally threatened buildings.

Meanwhile, seven fire crews responded to reports of a large scrub fire on State Highway 1 in the Ashburton District.

The fires, which involved grass and scrub, were located in Chertsey - just south of Rakaia, the FENZ spokesman said.

Traffic on SH1 was held up by the fire and the road was down to one lane.

Further north, firefighters battled a large scrub fire in south-east Auckland.

The fires come amid hot and windy conditions throughout the country. On Thursday, FENZ prohibited all fires and activities that caused fires in the Otago region.

Prohibited fire seasons last week took effect at several places throughout the country.

Tinder dry grass and warm, windy weather prompted the bans.
