A person died by drowning at the boat ramp at Whangamata on Wednesday afternoon.
Police and ambulance were called to the waterfront on Beach Road just after 3pm, where the person had been pulled from the water.
Despite efforts to revive them, the person died at the scene. According to NZME, the victim was a man in his 70s.
Photos show around a dozen emergency services members standing on the beach, along with vehicles from St John, Fire and Emergency and Police.
Police say the death is expected to be referred to the Coroner.
