A person has been found dead in the south Auckland suburb of Favona after an alleged shooting.
Police confirmed they responded to a report of an alleged "gunshot noise" near a Calthorpe Close property at roughly 2:50am on Wednesday. The individual was found deceased inside the home.
In a statement later on Wednesday morning, Counties Manukau Police confirmed a homicide investigation has been launched.
"The community can be reassured that a number of detectives are now working on this investigation. Police have also increased frontline patrols in the wider area," Acting Detective Inspector Shaun Vickers said.
A post-mortem examination and victim identification processes are yet to be carried out.
A cordon is in place around the property. A scene examination will take place throughout Wednesday.
A resident of the quiet street said he initially wasn't sure what was going on.
"I could just hear the helicopters flying at a low distance above our house this morning but i didn't realise what happened," Pastor Faatoe Fuimaono said.
This isn't the first time the property's been the centre of an apparent shooting. In December, a man was shot and seriously injured at the house.
Police say it's too early to speculate whether the events are connected, but it's forming part of their investigation.
Fuimaono added he's questioning how safe his community really is.
"The street is quiet, but when these kinds of things happen I feel like looking for another place."
Police are appealing for anyone with information to come forward and contact Counties Manukau Crime Squad on 09 261 1321.
