A tramper who went missing in the Huxley Valley, west of Mt Cook, has been found alive.
The Rescue Coordination Centre says the man, aged in his late 60s, became separated from his companion on New Year's Day afternoon. When the man didn't show up at their hut on Wednesday night, the 61-year-old companion activated the locator.
Two hunters in the area found him and set off their personal locator beacons to alert authorities.
A helicopter has now picked him up. His condition is not yet known but it is likely he will be flown by helicopter to either Dunedin or Queenstown, depending how he is.
