Two people have been airlifted to hospital after a bus rolled near Queenstown.
Two others in a less serious condition have also been taken in for treatment.
More than 20 tourists were on the bus when it crashed on Glenorachy- Queenstown Road at 1:45pm on Tuesday.
Three ambulances, two helicopters and an emergency manager attended the chaotic scene. Members of the public have been praised by police for their quick actions in the aftermath of the crash.
"I want to highlight the good work by the members of the public who were first responders on the scene, who helped those involved until emergency services arrived," said Otago Lakes area commander Inspector Olaf Jensen in a statement on Tuesday.
The road will remain closed while heavy lifting equipment is used to right the bus, and motorists are asked to avoid the area.
The serious crash unit has been advised.
