A person has drowned at Karioitahi Beach, on the west coast south of Auckland on Sunday evening.
Emergency service were called around 7:15pm after three people got into difficulty at the popular swimming and surfing spot.
"Two people made it back to shore and have been transported to hospital, with minor and moderate injuries," a police spokesperson says.
"A third person was pulled from the water, however they were unable to be revived and died at the scene."
The death will be referred to the Coroner.
