A New Zealand man has been arrested after hundreds of kilograms of methamphetamine were intercepted in a massive Australian drug bust.
Australian Federal Police (AFP) say the 33-year-old Kiwi national and a 35-year-old British-South African man will appear in court on Sunday facing serious drug charges.
Following a tip-off from New Caledonian authorities, Australian police identified a yacht called the La Fayette which was believed to have been loaded with drugs around Norfolk Island.
The La Fayette was traced and intercepted about 50 nautical miles east of Lake Macquarie, north of Sydney.
"It will be alleged investigators located blocks wrapped in plastic on board the vessel," the AFP said in a statement.
"Specialist forensic officers are continuing to deconstruct the boat and examine the contents, which is believed to contain methamphetamine.
"Further forensic testing will be undertaken to determine the exact weight and purity of the seized substances.
"The men were taken to Surry Hills police station and charged with importing a commercial quantity of border-controlled drugs."
If convicted the maximum penalty is life imprisonment. Police say they can't rule out further arrests.
