The COVID-19 pandemic has forced GPs to reconsider making virtual and over-the-phone consultations more widely available as it can be more convenient for some patients.
Although GPs and healthcare providers can stay open throughout all alert levels, many patients received consultations virtually as a way to potentially stop the spread of the virus.
Urgent care director Dr Alistair Sullivan of Auckland's Tāmaki Health says doctors have always planned towards virtual appointments, but the pandemic has quickened that process.
"COVID-19 has given us all a big kick up the backside - it's really accelerated that process. So we're looking at doing more, having these more available, and it's good and convenient for patients," Dr Sullivan told The Project.
But he says there are still some instances where patients will have to physically show up to consultations.
"There are many people who will absolutely need a face-to-face [consultation]. And one thing I can emphasise is if you think you need to see your doctor, then you should turn up."
