Murderer and paedophile Phillip Smith has been denied parole following a hearing on Thursday.
This was his 12th hearing and he will next be seen by the parole board in April 2022.
Smith was jailed in 1995 after murdering the father of a 12-year-old boy he had been molesting, which he is currently serving a life sentence for.
He then escaped to Brazil in 2014 wearing a toupee while on temporary release from prison. The hairpiece became a point of contention and was subsequently confiscated when he was returned to jail.
But in 2017, the High Court ruled taking the toupee was against his right to "free expression" under the Bill of Rights Act.
Smith is currently held at Upper Hutt's Rimutaka Prison under low security.
