Mother Nature could be about to disrupt many Kiwis' Queen's Birthday weekend plans, but may bring some relief to those still struggling with dry conditions.
According to MetService, on Sunday in Northland - which has been hit hard by this year's drought - some areas could experience rain rates of 20-25mm/hr, accumulating to 80-120mm.
"Heavy rain may cause streams and rivers to rise rapidly. Surface flooding and slips are also possible and driving conditions may be hazardous," MetService says in its heavy rain warning.
Further south on the Coromandel Peninsula, a heavy rain warning is in place from Sunday evening to Monday afternoon, with up to 150mm of water expected. A heavy rain watch is out for the wider Auckland region during the same period, with the forecaster saying "rainfall amounts may approach warning criteria".
It won't just be rain sweeping across the northern regions. Northland and Auckland are expected to be buffeted by easterly winds over the weekend.
"Strong easterly winds are forecast alongside heavy rain for these regions, with the potential to rise to gale in places. These winds have the potential to be damaging and make driving hazardous," MetService says.
"It’s been a while since these regions have experienced such strong winds, so take the time to secure any items and structures."
The Auckland Civil Defence Emergency Management warned across the north: "We're expecting heavy rain and strong wind tomorrow and Monday."
