One person dead after reported assault on Auckland's North Shore

One person has died after a reported assault at what's thought to be a boarding house near AUT's North Shore campus.

At around 5:30pm on Thursday police rushed to the scene on Akoranga Drive. Upon arrival they found a person with critical injuries - despite being rushed to hospital, they died shortly afterwards.

Another person was also injured and has been taken to hospital.

Police have taken one person into custody.

"While this incident will be unsettling for the community initial indications suggest the parties involved in the incident were known to each other," said Detective Inspector Aaron Proctor in a statement.

Neighbours say they heard a man calling for help from an upper window of the building shortly before police arrived on scene.

One witness told Newshub she was on her way home from university when she saw the commotion.

"There was a gentleman on the second floor just screaming for help and there were two men - one older gentleman outside on the ground and another in a station wagon and I couldn't hear what they were saying but I think they were just telling him to hold on," she said.

The witness said the man did not say what was happening.

"He was just screaming for help."
