Police have launched a homicide investigation after a body was discovered on a central Auckland street.
On Monday the man's body was found on Parkfield Terrace in Grafton.
A team of investigators are now working to piece together what led to his death. Detective Inspector Lloyd Schmid says the man was in a dark coloured Mazda with three other people in the early hours of Monday.
"It appears they met up with another vehicle in St Johns Road where an altercation occurred," Schmid said on Tuesday.
Shots were fired and the dark coloured Mazda took off to Parkfield Terrace, carrying the man.
The driver called emergency services but the man died.
"Police have been speaking with the occupants of the Mazda and they are assisting us with our enquiries."
Despite the help of the Mazda occupants police are still appealing to the public for information - anyone who saw the car in the St John and Glen Innes area between 5.30am and 6.30am on Monday is urged to contact police.
"Police believe there will be people in the community who will have information which would assist the investigation and we urge them to contact us."
