Homicide investigation launched after man dies at boarding house on Auckland's North Shore

A homicide investigation has been launched following the death of a man at what's believed to be a boarding house on Auckland's North Shore.

Police were called to the property on Northcote's Akoranga Dr at around 5:30pm on Thursday, and on arrival found a person with critical injuries.

Despite being rushed to hospital, the man died a short while later.

Detective Inspector Aaron Proctor, Waitematā CIB, says a serious assault had taken place at the address.

A second man, who suffered minor injuries in the incident, was taken to hospital, while a third was arrested and remains in police custody.

Det Insp Proctor says no charges have yet been laid, but enquiries are underway.

"Police have a scene guard in place at the address on Akoranga Dr today while a scene examination takes place," he said in a statement to media.

"A post-mortem will take place with formal identification procedures to be carried out.

"While this incident would have been alarming for the community, police would like to reassure them that at this early stage we are not seeking anyone else in relation to this incident."

Neighbours say they heard a man calling for help from an upper window of the building shortly before police arrived on scene.

One witness told Newshub she was on her way home from Auckland University of Technology's North Shore campus when she saw the commotion.

"There was a gentleman on the second floor just screaming for help," she said.

"There were two men - one older gentleman outside on the ground and another in a station wagon - and I couldn't hear what they were saying, but I think they were just telling him to hold on."

The witness said the man did not say what was happening and was "just screaming for help".
