Attendees at a tangi for a Mongrel Mob member who died in a recent homicide have swamped a Hamilton street and caused mayhem for parents trying to pick children up from a nearby school.
Deiderick John Grant, known as DJ, was killed at a party in Bader, Hamilton on Friday night.
The 57-year-old was formally identified on Tuesday and police launched an investigation to find the offender.
Hamilton's Maeroa Intermediate School issued an explanation on its Facebook page on Wednesday and apologised for the nearby commotion.
It says police were present at the tangi and staff were also out on the road to help students navigate through the crowd. Police at one stage advised students to use the rear entrance of the school to leave, but this only caused further confusion for parents and children who weren't at the normal pick-up place.
"This situation was beyond the control of our school and is not something we were notified about in advance in order to plan for. It is certainly not something that happens all the time," the Facebook post says.
Detective Inspector Graham Pitkethley from Waikato Police says Grant's tangi is attracting additional gang members who are gathering to mourn him.
Due to the increase in gang members and other recent gang-related incidents in Waikato, there is a heightened police response in place. These include an aggravated burglary and family harm incident in Ngaruawahia, a disorder incident in Whitianga and a fleeing driver incident involving gang members on bikes and in another car, police say.
"Waikato Police would like to reassure the community that Police have responded to these incidents as a priority and there is a heightened response in place."
The Mongrel Mob Kingdom held a farewell for Grant on Tuesday evening, and its president shared a video to Facebook of his coffin being carried into the clubhouse.
"There's a misconception that some people like to promote the MM Kingdom is hated among its peers," he wrote.
"But when it comes down to reliability? You can always guarantee the Kingdom will never let you down when you call upon its services.
"Moe Mai, Moe Mai Ra, e te rangatira DJ Rogue - gone but never forgotten."
Police urge the public to call 105 if they have any information on Grant's death.
