Kiwi volunteer firefighters are some of the biggest unsung heroes.
New Zealand has 11,500 unpaid firefighters, one of the highest numbers per capita of any country in the world.
They save the taxpayer around $659 million per year.
This week is National Volunteer Week, which celebrates the collective contribution of all volunteers in New Zealand. One in four Kiwis undertake some type of volunteering.
