The South Island has been struck by multiple earthquakes, with thousands of people reporting feeling the shaking.
On Thursday morning the lower South Island was hit by a 5.9 magnitude quake with an epicentre 35km west of Milford Sound.
At a depth of just 5km, the shaking was felt as far as the lower North Island, with people in Wellington saying they felt moderate shaking.
Residents of Queenstown, Wanaka, and Dunedin also all reporting feeling strong shaking.
Five minutes later a second quake struck, this time even closer to Milford Sound. While this quake was weaker at 4.2, it was still felt by more than 3000 people.
Half an hour later another quake was recorded by Geonet, again closer to Milford Sound, The 3.1 magnitude was recorded just 25km west of the Sound but less than 200 people felt the shaking.
