Eggs thrown during alleged racist attack at Auckland mall

Police are investigating an alleged racist attack in west Auckland where a man had eggs thrown at his car.

Gokul, who requested for his surname not to be used, was at Kelston Mall on Sunday afternoon when, on the way back to his car, a woman started yelling what he thought were foreign swear words at him.

"It was a Hindi swear word - she called me an a**hole," he told NZME.

He ignored her as he walked past, got into his car and locked it. It was then he saw a man approach his car and he began egging, footage shows.

At first, Gokul says he didn't realise what was happening because the man had a smile on his face while holding a tray of eggs.

"I just kept saying: 'Why are you doing this?' He didn't say anything. He was smiling."

He told NZME he blocked the man's car and called the police, but the woman who first yelled at him started to reverse almost hitting his car, so Gokul left.

Gokul, of Indian descent, said he felt the random egging was racially-fuelled and totally unprovoked.

He has lived in New Zealand for a number of years and said he had never experienced anything like it.

It made him feel "real helpless", and he said "you don't do that" in New Zealand.

The Waitemata West police told Newshub they are investigating the egging.

"The incident was reported to have taken place around 4.30pm yesterday afternoon," Inspector Matt Laurenson said.

"Police are making follow up enquiries including reviewing footage of this incident."

This was the first of two racially-fuelled egging incidents allegedly perpetrated by the same person. Uber driver Shane Shi - who is originally from China - was taking a passenger through central Auckland when an egg was hurled at his car, NZME reported.
