The closure of the Tiwai Point Aluminium smelter will be a devastating blow to the Southland economy with more than 1000 jobs disappearing - but it could also spell problems for the rest of the country.
The smelter uses a whopping 13 percent of New Zealand's electricity which will be dumped back into the market.
Auckland University energy scientist Nicola Gaston spoke to The AM Show about why that energy dump could hike power prices.
