Two people have been excused from managed isolation and are being allowed to stay at their South Auckland home due to a serious medical condition.

A managed isolation and quarantine spokesperson confirmed to Newshub the pair have both tested negative on their three day test.

"Their day 12 test is due to be undertaken over the weekend."

The spokesperson said strict rules are being followed to ensure all public health risks are appropriately managed.

Forty-four applications for medical exemptions have been considered and 42 have been declined or not progressed.

"In order to be granted an exemption for this reason, there must be serious health conditions present that cannot be adequately addressed in a hotel setting."

The spokesperson confirmed it was the second time someone returning from overseas had been permitted to stay at home.

They urged for the privacy of the two people to be protected as they are managing a pre-existing health condition.
