MetService warns of a "dramatic change in the weather" for the North Island next week as a low heads across the Tasman Sea.
As the subtropical moisture system moves to northern New Zealand from late Monday through Tuesday, it's forecast to bring heavy rainfall and strong winds to northern and eastern areas.
"On Tuesday, there is high confidence of rainfall accumulations reaching warning criteria in Northland, while the confidence is moderate for Auckland including Great Barrier Island and Coromandel Peninsula," MetService says.
"There is also moderate confidence of warning amounts of rain in Bay of Plenty and eastern Waikato near the Kaimai Range during Tuesday and early Wednesday.
"From late Tuesday to Wednesday, there is low confidence of rainfall amounts reaching warning criteria in Gisborne and Hawkes Bay, but the confidence increases to moderate about Wairoa District."
MetService says there's also a low confidence of northeasterlies rising to severe gales in exposed parts of Northland and Auckland on Tuesday, including the Great Barrier Island and Coromandel Peninsula.
