Another front of thunder is forecast to hit New Zealand on Monday after a rough weekend.
"Quite an unstable northwest flow over the North Island and upper South Island today, with plenty of rain and even lightning to show for it," MetService says on Twitter.
There's a moderate risk of thunderstorms for western parts from Northland to Taranaki. In the afternoon this risk extends eastwards to Taupo, Bay of Plenty, Taihape, Wanganui, Manawatu, Horowhenua and Kapiti Coast.
"These thunderstorms may produce rainfall rates of 10 to 20mm per hour and hail of 5 to 15mm diameter, also strong wind gusts of 90km/h from Northland to Taranaki," MetService says.
"A low risk of thunderstorms covers remaining western parts of the North Island, also the Marlborough Sounds and down into Westland."
Already there's "plenty of activity" in Taranaki at the moment, with a map showing a lot of lightning off the coast.
NIWA says it's the start of an unsettled week as multiple areas of low pressure approach the country.
"In addition, temperatures will decrease beginning on Tuesday as a southerly change arrives, with gusty winds making it feel even chillier," it states.
