Residents in an Auckland suburb want answers from local authorities after nine much-loved community geese were run over on Sunday morning.
The Millwater locals woke to carnage as feathers were strewn across the road from the incident.
Local Lisa O'Grady lives just down the street from where the dead geese were found. She captured CCTV footage showing a car, which she believes belongs to the culprit, speeding down the street before going around the block and doing it again minutes later.
"They've obviously gone around again and tried to take some more out," she said.
"It's just horrific. We've watched those geese grow up around here. They had babies and they've wiped out the whole family."
The incident happened outside Estelle's front yard. She said she woke up to a loud noise that sounded like a car "was driving into [her] husband's car".
"It was very loud and we lifted the blinds and saw all of the geese on the road dead," she said.
"There were five lying in front of my house and three being dragged by the car and they were all in pieces. It was horrific."
A group of five surviving geese huddled on the footpath for almost an hour after the others were run over.
Estelle's neighbour Bev Torrance said she's devastated because she's watched the geese grow up and took lots of videos of them playing in her front yard.
"On our walks, we would see them almost every day. It was gorgeous, they were beautiful, we are going to miss them."
Residents have contacted both the SPCA and the police, who say they are investigating.
