The Defence Force has been ordered to pay $288,750 plus court costs of $2629 over the death of a sailor.
Zachary Yarwood was critically injured during a diving exercise in Devonport last year. The 23-year-old died in hospital a day after he was pulled from the water.
His mother, Elizabeth Yarwood told the Auckland District Court on Friday she has been struggling to contain her grief.
She says she has reoccurring dreams of her son lying at the bottom of the ocean.
Yarwood joined the Royal New Zealand Navy in 2013 and served on HMNZS Te Kaha and Philomel.
The advanced diving training exercise was taking place in roughly six to eight metres of water when he got into trouble.
