New Zealand's Labour weekend road toll has risen to four.
On Friday night, a motorcyclist was killed in a serious crash in Upper Hutt - the first of the three tragic crashes.
Another person died in a crash on Whatatutu Road Te Karaka on the outskirts of Gisborne just before 2am on Saturday.
Hours later, another died in a two-car crash near Tekapo which left a second person injured.
On Saturday evening, police confirmed a pedestrian had died following a crash with a heavy-vehicle earlier in the day on State Highway 3, Westmere in the Whanganui district. The road remains closed and diversions are in place. Police enquiries are ongoing to both identify the person's next of kin and understand the circumstances of the crash.
A slew of other accidents have caused chaos on roads across the country.
A car flipped near the intersection of Railway Rd South and Tollemache Rd West near Hastings.
Just before 6pm, NZTA said there had been a serious crash on State Highway 26 from Paeroa to Kopu.
"The road is now CLOSED from the intersection with SH25A to Warahoe Rd. SCU is en route to investigate this crash, the road will remain closed for several hours. Please follow directions of emergency services for the detour."
People were trapped after a two-vehicle crash on Main South Rd in Burnham at about 2pm. The road was closed between Thomsons Rd and Burnham Rd and diversions were put in place. A rescue helicopter was sent to the scene.
A traffic incident at 2:20pm on State Highway 7 near Kaiata has led two patients to be transported to Greymouth Hospital in a moderate condition.
There have been at least four crashes on Auckland's State Highway 1 since 10am on Saturday - one of which involved six vehicles.
Another crash involved four vehicles - no injuries were reported.
The Harbour Bridge was also impacted by a crash, with lane 4 blocked for more than an hour.
Further North delays are expected after a crash blocking multiple lanes on State Highway 25 south of Boat Harbour Rd.
Police rushed to another crash just after midday involving a motorcyclist and a car near Woodville in the Manawatu. The person on the bike has been seriously injured in the collision.
There was also a single-motorcycle crash around 10:40am on the Desert Rd, 3km south of Kaimanawa Rd. The motorcyclist was critically injured, according to police, and helicoptered to hospital. The Serious Crash unit is investigating.
While driving this long weekend, the NZTA advises people to be aware of congestion and delays at peak times, and be patient.
