A cycling advocate is outraged and fears for cyclists' safety after a new video shows a truck allegedly tailing and ramming a biker in Christchurch.
It has worried cyclists and shocked Cycling Action Network spokesperson Patrick Morgan.
"I was outraged when I saw this video. This is like a deliberate attack on somebody riding a bike in Christchurch and it's not acceptable," he said.
Tooting is heard in the video as the truck stalks the cyclists for over a minute.
Cyclists Newshub spoke to on Monday say situations similar to what the video shows isn't uncommon.
"[I see a scary situation] about once a month, sometimes more. You think there goes my life," Phyllis Wheatley said.
"Every time I go out [I have a run-in with a car]. I've had beer cans thrown at me and I'm a really safe cyclist, I'm really aware of the traffic, I'm always looking behind me," Mike Holland said.
"I've actually just come from San Francisco and it's amazing there because it's a hilly city, more people, more cars, but a lot safer than Christchurch. When I bike around Christchurch I find I'll be biking along a cycleway and suddenly it disappears or something is protruding that I have to avoid," Josh On said.
But Morgan said it's just the small minority of drivers putting cyclists in danger.
"Most drivers do the right thing. They are courteous and they do the safe thing around people on bikes," he said.
"Unfortunately there are a few people who just don't really understand cycling and behave aggressively on the road. It's not okay. We need the police to do more to enforce safe road use."
A 65-year-old man has been charged with dangerous driving causing injury in relation to the incident and is due to reappear in the Christchurch District Court in December.
