Auckland University says all further exams for semester two will be online in a cautious effort to stop the spread of COVID-19 following a case in the Auckland CBD.

The decision has not pleased some students though who have already sat in-person exams.

On Friday the Government announced there would be no change in COVID-19 alert levels and Auckland would stay at level 1, following the discovery that the latest case is genomically linked to the Defence Force cluster.

While initially encouraged to work from home, people can now return to the CBD - including staff and students at the university.

Auckland University says the decision to keep exams online through to the end of the examination period on November 21 was made due to the "possibility of further disruptions and alert level changes."

The decision applies to all Auckland University students even if their campus is not in the CBD but exceptions have been made for exams requiring physical performances such as dance or music.

The decision has been welcomed by MP for Auckland Central Chloe Swarbrick, who thanked students and staff via Twitter who "worked" to get exams online following the new case on Thursday.

There are mixed responses from students, many who have already sat in-person exams finding the decision "unfair" as online exams are an open book.

"I've sat all my exams. Does that mean I get a grade bump for not having an open book? How unfair," one Facebook user commented under Auckland University's announcement.

Others are criticising the University, saying they should have been prepared and held all exams online in the first place like other universities such as Massey University have done.

"Mickey Mouse... why weren't all exams online in the first place when most universities in the world are online? how are you going to address the fact that it’s not fair that some students got to do all exams open book," another Facebook user said.

Many students, especially those yet to complete exams were happy with the news, sharing their excitement via Facebook; "We have been blessed!" One user wrote.

If students aren't able to access the internet, a quiet location, or computer at home the university is allowing them to use computers on campus to take exams.
