Coronavirus: No new COVID-19 cases in community, four in MIQ facilities

There are four new cases of coronavirus, the Director-General of Health has revealed - but they're all in managed isolation and quarantine (MIQ) facilities.

In a press conference from Ministry of Health headquarters on Monday afternoon, Dr Ashley Bloomfield confirmed there are no new community cases after two New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) workers were reported to have contracted COVID-19 in the last few days.

Testing has been carried out the close contacts of both workers. In the first case (Case A), all 24 close contacts tested negative but one, who is identified as Case B.

Case B has 55 close contacts, 32 of which have now returned negative results. The others are yet to be tested, with some self-isolating at home and others in quarantine facilities due to the nature of their work.

Three of these contacts share a household with Case B, but have returned negative results. Two are students who attend different schools in Lower Hutt, but have not been at school since Friday - they are isolating and awaiting retesting.

Case B was on a flight from Auckland to Wellington on Thursday, and nine close contacts were identified from this. Seven have been tested and have returned negative results, though a casual contact has reported feeling unwell and are awaiting results on a test.

Of the four new cases, one arrived in New Zealand on October 27 from Austria via Qatar and Australia, returning a positive test on around day 12 of their stay.

The second and third travelled together from Dubai, landing in the country on November 5 and testing positive on around day three.

The fourth arrived on November 5 from Qatar, also testing positive around day three.

After one new recovery in the last 25 hours, there are now 51 active cases remaining in the country. The total confirmed and probable cases now stands at 1986.

Another 3042 tests were carried out on Sunday, taking the number of tests completed in New Zealand to 1,139,978.
