Police are investigating after a teenage girl was allegedly assaulted and robbed on a Wellington bus, days after a community meeting raised concern about rising crime rates in the area.
Stuff reports a group of teenagers filmed themselves attacking two people in separate incidents in Wainuiomata and Lower Hutt, later uploading the footage to social media.
One of the attacks targeted a 16-year-old girl on her way home from an appointment. The teenager told Stuff four boys and two girls were sitting behind her and were being "noisy" but she ignored them.
"[The attack] came out of nowhere," she said.
She was kicked and punched repeatedly, including in the head before the teenagers took her phone and eftpos card.
A police spokesperson told Newshub they are aware of the incident and are in the initial stages of assessing information.
They say they are speaking with a number of people in relation to the alleged attacks.
Newshub has contacted Metlink for comment.
The second attack occurred in Queensgate Mall, where a boy in school uniform was followed and attacked by three teenagers. This incident was also filmed, reports Stuff.
The two incidents come 48 hours after a public meeting in Wainuiomata focused on the rise of youth crime, gang violence and a lack of police presence in the area.
Members of the community gathered to voice their concerns about the city, citing the rise of synthetic drugs and methamphetamine, and the increased visibility of gang members in Wainuiomata.
