Tauranga Mayor Tenby Powell has resigned, effective immediately.
Marty Grenfell, the Tauranga City Council's chief executive, confirmed on Friday that he had received a letter of resignation from Powell.
"He said the Mayor had cited a number of reasons for his decision and had expressed the hope that the resolution adopted by the Council today, to ask the Minister of Local Government to appoint a Crown Manager, would facilitate the best possible outcomes for the city," a media statement said.
The resignation came after the council voted to bring in a Crown manager amid conflict between elected representatives.
Grenfell said the executive team was heartened by Powell's expression of support and "confidence in staff to continue running the business of Council professionally".
He wished Powell well and hoped he had a speedy recovery from his upcoming prostate cancer treatment.
Grenfell will liaise with the Minister of Local Government in regard to appointing a Crown Manager.
