No one will escape the rain this weekend with unsettled conditions set to hit right across the country.
Metservice is forecasting a stack of active weather making its way into Saturday and Sunday due to two approaching weather systems in what they have described as a "turbulent" weekend.
In the South Island, a cold front will move up from the lower south on Saturday bringing with it rainfall, cold winds, and chilly temperatures.
On Saturday evening the North Island will see an area of subtropical low pressure swing its way down from the North West causing heavy rain.
The collision of these warm northeasterlies and cold southerlies is also going to be a contributing factor to the predicted heavy rain.
For much of the North Island Saturday morning will be off to a partly cloudy but fine start with warm temperatures, Auckland will see a high of 21C, Wellington 18C, and Whanganui 23C.
The wet weather caused by the low-pressure system is due to drench the North Island from Saturday afternoon with possible thunderstorms overnight for the upper north.
The South Island will also see a settled but cloudy Saturday morning with upper and central South Island seeing showers by lunchtime and at a similar time Southern areas see windy chilly temperatures, and rainfall brought in by the cold front.
Christchurch gets a high of 21C on Saturday, Queenstown 18C and Invercargill 13C. Those in the lower South Island will see temperatures drop significantly over the day to what feels like 12C or colder.
On Sunday those in the North Island will all be waking up to a soggy morning and southerly winds with a few fine spots peeking through in the middle of the day before returning again to rain.
Wellington receives a high of 16C that feels more like 10C and Metservice says temperatures along the east coast will also see a "dramatic" change in the afternoon with Napier and Gisborne dropping from 25C and 24C to the early teens.
Gale southeasterlies are predicted for Taranaki, Wairarapa and Wellington and Metservice has "high confidence" of rainfall reaching warning amounts in Marlborough, Wellington, and South of Wairarapa.
A warning amount of rainfall is anything greater than 50mm within six hours or 100mm within 24 hours.
Just like the North, the South Island will be waking up to rain on Sunday, sticking around in Marlborough, Canterbury, and Nelson and clearing up by the afternoon for the lower south.
The southern cold front is in action again on Sunday for the lower South Island which may see snow at 700m and force temperatures down 8C.
Dunedin gets a high of 12C, Hokitika 15C, Kaikoura 16C, and Christchurch 13C.
NIWA is forecasting ongoing unsettled weather following the weekend into next week, all down to the polar and subtropical jet streams colliding.
NIWA says the interaction happens "infrequently" but when it does it triggers "noteworthy weather."
