Police are investigating reports of an assault on a 13-year-old boy at a school in west Auckland on Monday.
According to an email sent out by Glen Eden Intermediate School on Wednesday morning, it happened during the lunch break.
"We are currently working closely with police who are investigating the incident," said principal Maree Stavert.
"We have been in contact with parents of the students who witnessed the assault and the student involved has returned to school today. "
Police confirmed to Newshub an investigation was underway.
"Police are working to establish the full circumstances surrounding this incident, and as those enquiries are ongoing, police are not in a position to comment further at this stage."
Stavert said the incident "shocked" the school's staff and student body.
"We are working hard to support students as needed. If you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact the school directly."
The email appears to have been sent just minutes before the incident was first reported in the media.
Stavert told nzherald.co.nz the boy was not badly hurt, and was not at fault.
"It's not what you expect to happen. But it's just something have to work through with. I haven't seen anything like it."
Glen Eden Intermediate is a large school with more than 1000 students.
