A busy store at Auckland's NorthWest Shopping Centre has been robbed by armed men who fled the scene with an unknown quantity of jewellery.
Jewellery retailer Michael Hill was the target of the smash-and-grab on Monday morning, with two men using hammers to shatter the glass display cabinets.
"Police are making enquiries following an incident at a jewellery store in Westgate this morning," the spokesperson confirmed to Newshub.
"At around 9:40am, two offenders entered the store with weapons and smashed glass cabinets before fleeing the scene with stolen jewellery."
Several people who contacted Newshub claimed the noise of the robbery sounded like gunfire.
The manager of the adjacent store, The Body Shop, told Newshub staff members immediately ran to the back room when they heard the commotion, but didn't witness the robbery.
One witness told the New Zealand Herald there was no sign of security guards when the men "smashed, grabbed and dashed".
Police are currently at the scene of the robbery and are making follow up enquiries to identify and locate the offenders.
