A car caught fire in the Karangahake Gorge, Coromandel Peninsula, sending a plume of black smoke into the sky on Boxing Day.
According to a police spokesperson, emergency services were called to the scene at 1:35pm where smoke and flames were seen coming from the bonnet area in what was assumed to be an engine fire.
One lane was blocked while emergency services worked to put the flames out.
There were no injuries and the car has now been moved off the road.
