NZTA warns motorists to expect delays after crash on Auckland's Southern Motorway

A major crash on Auckland's Southern Motorway has blocked a lane and caused major delays going south.

The New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) reported the crash just after the Mt Wellington Highway on-ramp around 1:15pm on Wednesday.

"Southbound lanes are blocked just after the Mt Wellington Highway on-ramp, due to a crash," NZTA posted on Twitter.

"Expect delay until the crash can be fully cleared."

The transport agency warns Kiwi motorists to drive carefully this Christmas break.

There will be heavy traffic northbound on State Highway 1 between Puhoi and Wellsford from 9:30am - 5:30pm today as motorists leave Auckland for the holiday period.

NZTA's top tips for a safe journey:

  • Plan ahead
  • Don't drink and drive
  • Watch out for fatigue
  • Slow down and drive to the conditions
  • Keep your cool
  • Buckle up
