A 9-year-old child has been pulled over by police in Otago while driving his intoxicated dad to buy more alcohol.
The child and father were stopped by police on Saturday, the day of national 'Crate Day', in Mosgiel south of Dunedin at 7:30pm, acting Snr Sgt Anthony Bond told Newshub.
New Zealanders aren't able to obtain a learners' driver license until the age of 16.
"The 9-year-old's father was intoxicated in the vehicle and had asked the child to drive him to purchase more alcohol," Bond said. "The investigation is ongoing and no infringements or charges have been brought at this stage."
What started as a radio station publicity stunt 11 years ago, Crate Day has turned into tens of thousands of people partaking in the tradition of a single person drinking an entire crate - 30 standard drinks.
Police said on Saturday officers were out enforcing local liquor bans and encouraging participants to make sure food and non-alcoholic drinks were provided at parties.
Alcohol campaigners, meanwhile, have renewed calls for the event to be banned.
