A Lower Hutt couple received an early wake-up call on Monday after a car crashed through their fence and into their front yard.
Sam Telfer and her partner Matt woke to "an incredibly loud bang" on their street in the suburb of Taita at 6:30am.
"We assumed it was a crash on the street but quickly realised it was in our front yard," she told Newshub.
"I grabbed my phone immediately to call an ambulance but by the time we got outside there was no one in the car."
Telfer's security camera footage shows the small blue car hurtling through their wooden fence. Upon impact, the airbags go off and four people are seen running out of the car back down the street.
"Most of our neighbours were outside already as everyone had woken to the sound. The police were super responsive and got other units out in the neighborhood quickly," Telfer says.
Police confirmed they were notified of the crash and their inquiries are ongoing.
Telfer says it's lucky the crash happened early in the morning and the streets were quiet.
"We are incredibly thankful that no one was driving past or walking along the footpath at the time it happened."
