A man is in critical condition after being shot by police in South Auckland on Thursday night.
Police were called to a property on Avis Avenue in Papatoetoe at 5:47pm after reports of a shot being fired.
Counties Manukau District Commander Superintendent Jill Rogers said the shot was fired through the window of a neighbouring house and no one was injured as a result.
"Police, including Armed Offenders Squad members and the Eagle helicopter, responded and cordons were put in place," she explained.
"At about 8:24pm the man came out of the house with a firearm and was shot by police. He has been taken to hospital in a critical condition."
Supt Rogers said a cordon will remain in place overnight and they will conduct a scene examination on Friday.
"A Critical Incident Investigation into the shooting is now underway and the IPCA will be notified."
Earlier on Thursday evening, a local told Newshub that he and neighbours had heard "three shots fired".
"The cops have blocked off some streets around Allenby Road," he said.
Footage from the scene showed a member of the Armed Offenders Squad pulling apart boards from a neighbour's fence and entering a property.
A police dog could also be seen following an officer around the side of the property.
