As it happened: Waitangi Day celebrations begin in Aotearoa

Waitangi Day Celebrations have begun in Waitangi. 

Ngāpuhi are hosting the Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, leader of the Opposition Judith Collins and other prominent New Zealanders at Te Rau Aroha Marae. 

Hundreds have gathered for the dawn service. 

Jacinda Ardern will hold her annual breakfast on the Treaty Grounds.

08:14am - Ardern was asked if COVID-19 cast a cloud over Waitangi this year?

"Well look I had every expectation that we might perhaps see fewer numbers for instance here at the dawn service, but while I don’t have a head-count I can tell you that certainly in terms of the breakfast, already 2500 breakfasts have already gone out – that’s an increase on last year. So, perhaps at this stage we’re still seeing people in high numbers here."

08:09am - "In terms of just the enthusiasm from New Zealanders who have come to experience Waitangi Day, in some cases for the first time, here on the Grounds it is a fantastic environment and I think increasingly the lead-up to Waitangi Day is being used as a chance for good, robust debate and discussion, and that’s as it should be," Ardenr told the crowd. 

"I think every Waitangi Day is a chance to reflect on what has happened in the last year, how we’re progressing our partnership or our relationship, but also constantly looking forward with hope.

"You know, there are things that we need to do better but I do absolutely believe that you do get a sense of optimism about what can be achieved together."

Dame Patsy Reddy’s term ends this year.

08:00am - The Prime Minister has sad there should be more Maori at all levels of society - including in her role. 

07:55am - Ardern has praised the turnout and level of enthusiam at the Treaty Grounds saying it has created a great atmosphere.

07:07 - In line with modern day COVID-19 etiquette people are being asked to scan a QR code and sanitise their hands as they enter the breakfast.

06:40am - Big crowds at the Prime Minister’s breakfast despite the COVID-19 scare in Northland, huge queues gathered to get a share of the breakfast cooked by MPs on the Treaty Grounds.

06:00 - Jacinda Ardern sits hand-in-hand with Titewhai Harawira during Waitangi Day dawn service. A pretty big turn out at the Treaty Grounds despite the recent coronavirus scare in Northland. 

05:50 - A lone female protestor disrupted proceedings, shouting out about a number of issues. 

"Do not talk about God when there is inequality," she said before being given a hug by a Maori warden.
