A homicide investigation has been launched following an incident in Pukekohe on Wednesday morning.
Police attended a McNally Road property shortly after 9am to conduct a bail check.
A man, who was on electronically-monitored bail - was found with critical injuries.
While making enquiries at the scene, police also discovered a woman's dead body.
A post-mortem examination was completed on Thursday but police are still working at formally identifying the woman.
The man was transported to Middlemore Hospital and remains in a critical condition.
"At this stage we are unable to release the woman's name," a police spokesperson said.
"We would like to reassure the Pukekohe community that while we have launched a homicide enquiry into this matter, we are not currently seeking anyone else in relation to the woman's death."
The scene examination remains ongoing at the property on Thursday.
"While we appreciate there may be further questions about our presence at the address, we are unable to comment further as this forms part of our investigation."
