A police officer has a skull fracture and is still in hospital after they were allegedly assaulted with a baseball bat during a routine traffic stop in Hamilton.
Two police officers stopped a car in the suburb of Fairfield just after midnight on Monday and were speaking with the driver before he brought out the bat.
Both officers were taken to Waikato Hospital in a moderate condition. One officer has been discharged with a concussion and the second has a skull fracture. They are still in hospital but in a stable condition.
Hamilton City Area Commander Inspector Andrea McBeth says a 17-year-old male was arrested and will appear in the Youth Court.
She says the police officers involved in the incident are being supported.
