Man arrested after threat results in Picton ferries being evacuated, searched

A 33-year-old man has been arrested after a threat led to the evacuation and search of two ferries berthed in Picton.

Police reported the threat on Monday morning and launched an investigation along with specialist groups.

They evacuated the Bluebridge and Interislander ferries and terminal buildings while the search was carried out.

On Monday afternoon, police confirmed a 33-year-old man had been arrested in relation to the threat, which was directed at the Cook Strait ferry services in Picton on Monday.

"Charges are still being considered, however he is expected to appear in the Blenheim District Court tomorrow," Marlborough Area Commander Inspector Simon Feltham said.

"We appreciate today's incident caused considerable disruption and distress for many.

"I would like to acknowledge our Specialist Search Group staff, who flew from Wellington to complete an extensive search of both the terminal buildings and ferries, and the investigation team, who identified and located the alleged offender."
