Two bodies have been found on Taranaki Maunga overnight.
Emergency services were called to reports a climber had fallen near the summit of the mountain just before 10pm on Tuesday.
A police statement said the bodies were found just after midnight following a Search and Rescue operation.
Police said work to recover the bodies is continuing on Wednesday.
"Due to the weather and light conditions, the bodies could not be recovered at the time," the statement said.
"Police and Alpine Cliff Rescue staff are currently on the mountain attempting to recover the bodies and conduct a scene examination."
Formal identification is yet to be completed and an investigation into the incident is ongoing, police said.
