A woman has died after the car she was driving caught fire on a Wellington highway.
Police say the woman was critically injured in the fire and died on Monday morning.
It's unclear how the incident and fire began but police have confirmed it was a single-vehicle crash.
Witnesses told Stuff the incident was "absolutely horrific".
Melissa Bishell and friend Laurie Campbell saw the aftermath of the crash on Centennial Highway under the Newlands Bridge over-ramp.
They saw a man running around the car to the driver's side, and a woman getting out.
"You couldn't see any skin or clothing, she was that engulfed in flames. It was horrible. I don't think I will ever get that out of my brain. The panic on the man's face running around there, it was horrific."
An investigation into the circumstances of the crash is underway.
