The central North Island was jolted by a 4.8-magnitude earthquake just after midday, GeoNet says.
The quake occurred 15km north-east of Turangi at 12:23pm on Thursday afternoon, striking at a very shallow depth of 5km.
GeoNet, which initially identified the quake as having a magnitude of 4.7, has described the shaking as "moderate".
Within minutes of the shake, hundreds of people had reported feeling it on the GeoNet website.
By 12:45pm, 1613 people had reported it, with the majority located in the Taupō, Turangi and Whanganui areas. Most described the jolt as "weak" or "light".
The quake comes after a series of small tremors in the Taupō region on Thursday morning.
"Woah that was another decent shake!" one person wrote on Twitter.
"Hmmmmmm…. #eqnz swarms around Taupō and Ōtautahi. With Welly in the middle. Yikes," said another.
