Ten new cases of COVID-19 have been picked up in managed isolation and quarantine facilities in the past two days.

There remains no evidence of COVID-19 in the community.

Four of the new imported cases travelled together in a group from Iraq via Qatar and arrived on May 26. All tested positive on day 11 or day 12 of their time in managed isolation.

As per Ministry of Health protocol, the cases will be investigated further as they were detected after day three of their mandatory 14-day stay.

Two others arrived on June 6 from the Philippines via Singapore. Both are contacts of a case and tested positive for the virus on day three and day five of their respective stays.

The seventh case arrived on June 3 from Russia, transiting through the UAE. They tested positive on day three.

The eighth and nine cases travelled from India via Qatar and arrived on June 4. Both tested positive on day one.

The final new case arrived on June 5 from the Philippines via Singapore and tested positive on the first day of their stay in managed isolation.

The seven-day rolling average of new cases detected at the border is three.

Five previously reported cases have now recovered, bringing the total number of active infections in New Zealand to 22. To date, the country has recorded a total of 2336 cases of COVID-19.

Since January 1, 2021, 520 cases have been detected in New Zealand, 67 of which have been classified as historical infections - meaning the test had picked up residual viral fragments in a recovered individual.

Melbourne

The Ministry of Health also provided an update regarding the ongoing outbreak in Melbourne.

The state of Victoria has now recorded 83 infections after two new cases were picked up on Tuesday.

The original cohort who flew from Melbourne to Auckland - prior to the current travel suspension - now sits at 4789 people, a spokesperson for the ministry confirmed. Of these travellers:

  • 1626 require no further action as they have returned to Australia, or it has been 14 days or more since the date of their exposure
  • 2933 have returned a negative result
  • 203 are exempt from testing because they are under the age of 12
  • 27 have no test result as yet.

Of 371 crew members

  • 239 have returned a negative result
  • 132 crew members have either no result as of yet, or require no further action.

Contact tracers have emailed and twice called each of the outstanding 27 travellers, a spokesperson said. If a negative result is logged, they will be removed from this list and added to the tally of people who have already returned a negative result.
