A dangerous prisoner linked to the Killer Beez gang has escaped from custody in Auckland.

Te Ariki Poulgrain, 23, was at a medical facility in Grafton for an appointment on Wednesday at 1:30pm when he escaped Corrections custody.

Detective Inspector Aaron Pascoe of the Auckland City Police says they are assisting Corrections in trying to locate him and assures locals they're doing all they can to find him.

"He is described as about 183cm tall and of thin build and is considered dangerous and should not be approached," he says.

"He has known links to the Killer Beez gang.

"He is believed to still be wearing a pair of Corrections handcuffs."

If anyone sees him, they're asked to call 111 immediately.

Poulgrain was among a group of three inmates who shanked murderer Graeme Burton at Auckland's Paremoremo Prison in 2018.

He was sentenced to three years and nine months' imprisonment the following year for his part in the attack.
